| Toyota is now offering its tiny Aygo city car with the Ford-PSA 1.4-litre diesel engine, as available in the Aygo's sister models, the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1. This engine returns 68.9mpg, emits 109g/km of carbon dioxide (putting it in Band B for vehicle excise duty) and is classed in insurance group 1E - running costs don't come much cheaper than this. However, it's not a cheap purchase and you'd have to do a high mileage to recoup the premium charged for this engine: prices start from ??8,345 (three-door Aygo+) with the five-door Sport version at a hefty ??9,095. Also new to the Toyota range for the New Year is the Corolla SR: metallic paint, 16-inch T Sport alloys, a front air dam, roof spoiler and tinted glass, plus climate control, electric/heated door mirrors, front fog lamps, six airbags, electric windows and CD player. It comes with either the 1.6 VVT-i petrol or 2.0 D-4D diesel engines, and costs from ??12,995. Although the Celica is soon to be discontinued, the last-hurrah Celica GT remains on sale at ??22,595. It comes with a full body kit, 17-inch alloys, Alcantara upholstery, climate control and a six-CD autochanger, and is now offered in colours including Chilli Red. Toyota is also upping kit in the Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Amazon: standard spec now includes front and rear parking sensors, and the Amazon gains a DVD player with twin monitors, infra-red headsets and games console compatibility. Land Cruiser prices have been upped by ??350 and now start from ??27,350; the huge Land Cruiser Amazon costs from ??48,095. Meanwhile, in the US, Toyota is introducing increasingly fuel-conscious Californians to the new-generation Yaris. It is launching this model, in "Liftgate" hatchback and saloon form with the 106 bhp 1.5-litre engine only, at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week. The Yaris will be positioned as a budget entry-level model costing from just $10,950, though this version will come minus electric windows, side airbags and even ABS. What would the Americans make of the ??9,000-plus Aygo...? Channel 4 News
